AI can also create risk from inside the business without anyone meaning to do harm. Employees may paste sensitive information (customer data, invoices, internal notes, passwords, contracts) into an AI tool to “save time,” not realizing that it may be stored, logged, or used in ways your company didn’t intend. Without clear rules, access controls, and monitoring, it becomes hard to know what data is being shared and where it ends up.
The goal isn’t to avoid AI—it’s to add guardrails so you can use it safely. Start with strong account protection (unique passwords and multi-factor authentication on email and key systems), limit access by job role, and set simple guidelines for what information should never be entered into AI tools.
Pair that with staff training on AI-powered scams and a basic “verify before you pay/change account details” process, and you’ll reduce the most common ways AI-related security issues impact small businesses.
